Maine Paid Family and Medical Leave
Maine’s paid family and medical leave (PFML) benefits will be available to employees beginning May 1, 2026. Employees who work for at least 120 consecutive calendar days prior to taking leave will generally be entitled to job protection. This is a result of ME HP 163/LD 258 which was signed by the governor on July 11, 2023 and ME SP 800/LD 1964 that implements recommendations for PFML and was passed to be enacted on June 23, 2023.
Employers will be required to provide new hires with a written notice within 30 days of hire in the employee’s primary language. Employers will also be required to display a poster in a conspicuous place in English and in any language that is the primary language of at least three employees, if available from the Maine Department of Labor (MDOL).
Both the notice and poster must be provided or approved by the MDOL, which has made a sample written notice and poster available in multiple languages on its website.
