Minnesota Law Updates 2025 Midyear
Cannabis Protections
Effective May 24, 2025, if an employer takes adverse action based on an employee's cannabis use (due to potential loss of federal funding or violation of law), they must provide 14 days' written notice to the employee. The notice must cite the federal law that would be violated and specify the monetary or licensing benefit the employer would lose if no action was taken.
The law also previously protected medical cannabis patients in the registry program from discrimination. It now extends the same protection to tribal medical cannabis program patients. A tribal medical cannabis program patient is defined as a person with a valid registration verification card or equivalent issued under the laws of a Tribal Nation in Minnesota.
Minimum Wage
Effective July 1, 2025, St. Paul's minimum wages for small and micro businesses will increase as follows:
$15 per hour for small businesses (6-100 employees).
$13.25 per hour for micro businesses (5 employees or fewer).
The minimum wage for employers with 101 or more employees will remain at $15.97 per hour.
